Our programmes are committed to waste as little as possible, recycle wherever we can and promote use of renewable energies. The projects strive to assist communities living in urban and peri-urban areas, especially in informal settlements across the country, to enjoy better and healthier living environment and gain access to income opportunities through being involved in the provision of services such as water, proper waste disposal and recycling, sanitation and energy.
Case study: improved water and sanitation services
Like most slums, the main challenge in Mukuru, Nairobi, is the basic lack of water points and toilets. But the challenges of getting piped water and sanitation services safely are complex. By building relationships between slum residents, local water vendors and the local water company, Practical Action is helping to improve access to safe water and sanitation.
